Body mass index has long been one of the most common tools for assessing obesity, but it does not always show where body fаt is stored or distinguish between different body compositions.


New research suggests that measuring waist circumference could provide much of the missing information without requiring a complicated set of tests.


Researchers analyzed several ways of identifying obesity and found that waist circumference alone performed almost as well as more complex approaches that combine several body measurements.


<h3>A Simple Measurement Can Be Powerful</h3>


The study examined data from 1,900 U.S. adults between the ages of 20 and 59. Researchers compared several methods of identifying obesity with a highly accurate measurement of actual body fаt. One of the approaches they evaluated was a recently proposed framework that combines BMI with waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio and waist-to-hip ratio.


Although the broader framework identified more people with excess body fаt, simpler methods produced similar overall accuracy. Using either BMI or waist circumference offered a strong balance between detecting people with obesity and avoiding incorrect diagnoses. Waist circumference on its own performed nearly as well.


<h3>Why Waist Size Matters</h3>


Waist circumference gives information that body weight alone cannot provide. Two people can have the same BMI but carry body fаt very differently. Fаt concentrated around the abdomen may be more closely associated with metabolic and cardiovascular health risks than fаt stored elsewhere. That means a person whose BMI falls outside the traditional obesity range may still carry an amount or distribution of body fаt that deserves attention.


Changes in clothing fit can sometimes provide an early clue. Needing a looser belt or larger trousers does not replace a proper measurement, but a steadily increasing waistline may signal changes in body composition worth discussing with a health professional.


<h3>BMI Does Not Tell the Whole Story</h3>


BMI is calculated using height and weight, making it fast and inexpensive. Its simplicity is useful, but it also creates limitations. The measure cannot directly distinguish between fаt and muscle, and it does not indicate where fаt is located on the body.


The study found that BMI alone failed to identify a substantial number of participants who met body-fаt criteria for obesity. That result adds to longstanding concerns about relying on BMI as the only screening tool. Rather than abandoning BMI completely, the findings suggest that combining it with a waist measurement may provide a clearer picture.


<h3>Complex Testing May Not Always Be Necessary</h3>


The newly proposed obesity framework includes several measurements, including hip circumference.


In theory, collecting more information could improve assessment. In everyday medical practice, however, complicated measurements are less likely to be performed consistently. Hip circumference, for example, is not routinely collected in many primary-care settings.


Waist circumference is much easier to measure and is already appearing more frequently in clinical guidelines.


This practicality matters.


A screening method only helps if clinicians and patients can actually use it regularly.


<h3>Earlier Detection Could Matter</h3>


Identifying potentially unhealthy body-fаt levels earlier could give people more time to address associated risks.


Excess body fаt can be linked with conditions including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, strоke and some cancers. The study does not suggest that waist circumference can diagnose these conditions by itself. Instead, it can serve as a useful screening measure that may prompt further evaluation.


A larger waist measurement should therefore be understood as one piece of health information rather than a diagnosis on its own. Other factors, including blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol levels, family history and overall lifestyle, still matter.


<h3>Making Screening More Practical</h3>


One of the strongest arguments for waist measurement is accessibility. It requires little equipment, takes only a short time and can be repeated easily. That makes it useful in routine appointments, where time and resources are often limited. A practical approach could involve measuring both weight and waist circumference instead of relying exclusively on BMI. This would allow clinicians to capture both overall body size and abdominal fаt distribution without introducing multiple complicated calculations.


<h3>A Better View of Body Composition</h3>


The findings support a broader shift in how obesity risk is assessed. Rather than depending on a single number, health screening may become more focused on where body fаt is stored and how it relates to individual risk.
